Leaders say budget cuts may reach 7 percent

- Legislative leaders said Thursday that budget cuts will be deeper than projected in the governor's proposed budget.

Senate President Pro Tem Brian Bingman, R-Sapulpa, and House Speaker Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, both said cuts of up to 7 percent could be possible for some state agencies.

Gov. Mary Fallin had put the budget reductions at 5 percent, with 3 percent for core agencies such as public safety, education, transportation and health care.

Agencies have absorbed significant cuts in recent years due to declining state revenue.

"It is pretty significant; I agree," said Bingman, who predicted cuts of 6 percent or 7 percent. Steele predicted cuts ranging from 3 percent to 7 percent... FULL ARTICLE
