Many successes mark Henry’s eight years as governor (EDITORIAL)

FEW pundits and politicians gave Brad Henry much of chance to become governor. A relatively unknown state senator from Shawnee, Henry finished second in the 2002 Democratic primary, then overcame a better-known opponent to win the runoff.

Waiting in November was a popular Republican congressman, known nationally for his exploits on the football field. Having beaten Vince Orza in the runoff, Henry did the unthinkable and upset Steve Largent to become governor.

He subsequently became one of the most popular politicians in state history. And for good reason.

Henry is “smart, savvy and honest,” we wrote in endorsing the senator for the 2002 Democratic nomination (The Oklahoman endorsed Largent in the fall). He has lived up to the description and then some.
