Regarding "A way to move state from the back of line" (Point of View, Sept. 15): Oklahoma's 2009 Teacher of the Year has gone on record stating her support for State Question 744. claiming it is a way to move the state's education system forward "from the back of the line." Heather Sparks complains that budget cuts are a pending catastrophe for Oklahoma's teachers and students, while the Legislature managed to "scrape together" $4.3 billion in new funding for state road and bridge projects.
It is time to dust off the textbooks and do a little math. Sparks is correct in the amount of money allocated to road and bridge projects, but surely she realizes that figure covers the next eight years. Simple division shows you that is $500 million a year on average, or about 6 percent of the state's budget... FULL ARTICLE
