Memorial bill passes House
The House approved a bill Monday that would require groups requesting or sponsoring a highway or bridge sign to pay for them. House Bill 1666, by Rep. Leslie Osborn, R-Tuttle, was passed 88-9 after an amendment was attached to it that would exclude highways or bridges that would be named to honor military members killed in action. Rep. Eric Proctor, D-Tulsa, filed the amendment because he said he didn’t want the family of a military member killed in action to have to pay the cost of the signs. Osborn said earlier the state Transportation Department pays $1,600 for each large sign on interstates and $400 for each sign on smaller highways. The cost is double because a sign is needed in each direction. HB 1666 now goes to the Senate.
