More overlays in the works in Fridayland

Smoother streets are coming to sections of northwest Oklahoma City, thanks to funds acquired from the recent federal stimulus package.

Overlay projects, similar to the one just completed on Pennsylvania Avenue in The Village, are planned for a variety of streets. Contracts have already been made and all of the projects are scheduled to be completed no later than the spring.

Those scheduled in northwest Oklahoma City include Pennsylvania Avenue from Britton Road to NW 122nd Street, Pennsylvania Avenue from NW 50th Street to NW 63rd Street, May Avenue from Hefner Road to Memorial Road and MacArthur Boulevard from Britton Road to Hefner Road.

Cole Hackett with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation said a total of $56.5 million was acquired from federal stimulus funds for street repairs, and that $33.5 million of that would be spent in Oklahoma City.

Many of the streets set for overlay also will receive handicap ramps at the curbs of intersections, a requirement set up through the Americans with Disabilities Act for all those who receive federal stimulus money.
