The spokesman for a school funding initiative on the ballot in November says opponents are "special interest forces” with "deep pockets” who wish to "preserve the status quo in education.” He could just as easily be describing the initiative's biggest backer.
We're talking about the National Education Association. Want deep pockets? The NEA recently wrote a check for $3 million to help the Yes on 744 campaign fight for passage of State Question 744. This after already spending nearly $650,000 for the cause.
Is there any organization more wedded to the status quo than the NEA? It bucks reform efforts at every turn — try getting rid of a bad teacher, for example. It sees the answer to every problem as nothing a little more money couldn't solve. SQ 744, of course, contains no reform measures. It seeks only to raise Oklahoma's per-pupil spending to the regional average, which would cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars and perhaps more than $1 billion... FULL ARTICLE
