New bridge to replace historic span

— The rumble of trucks crossing the 74-year old truss bridge northwest of Fort Gibson echoes along the Grand River’s banks.

“When I was a kid, I was afraid to go across it,” recalled Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore, a Fort Gibson native. “Now I’m afraid to go on it.”

Muskogee County will build a smooth, new, two-lane concrete bridge just south of the old one in late 2011. The bridge across the Grand River links Fort Gibson to Okay via Three Rivers Road.

However, the rusty old bridge, deemed a historic bridge, could have a future as a pedestrian bridge after the new one opens. On Monday, Muskogee Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution to retain the bridge in place... FULL ARTICLE
