The latest chunk of concrete to fall from the Crosstown Expressway's elevated portion should make us all grateful that a replacement is coming relatively soon.
Were it not for delays involving legal challenges and funding shortages, the relocation of Interstate 40 could be finished by now. The wait is worth it, though, because a roadway that's part of what is truly one of America's main streets will flow through downtown Oklahoma City with 10 lanes of new construction.
The state Transportation Commission this month approved the first paving contract for the Crosstown relocation. Drivers on the existing I-40 will soon see more of what $650 million is buying. If all goes as planned (things rarely do, unfortunately), the first motorists will drive on the new highway in late 2012... FULL ARTICLE
