In March 1997, David Streb, then an engineer with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, told a U.S. House subcommittee that if Congress approved funding for a new stretch of Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City, work could begin in 3-4 years and be completed three or four years after that.
Fifteen years later, the eastbound lanes of the new I-40 Crosstown opened to great fanfare Thursday. It'll be a few more weeks before the westbound lanes are ready for traffic, but heck, after 15 years, what's a few more weeks?
