Fallin takes office as state’s first woman governor

OKLAHOMA CITY – Smiling beneath a snowy, slate-gray sky, Republican Mary Fallin became Oklahoma’s first woman governor before a crowd of shivering dignitaries, members of the Legislature and several thousand supporters.
Fallin, who defeated Democrat Jari Askins in last November’s gubernatorial election for the post, was sworn in by state Supreme Court Justice Steven Taylor at noon. The state’s 27th governor, she replaces Democrat Brad Henry, who served as the state’s leader for eight years. Henry could not seek a third four-year term because of term limits.
Fallin said she was humbled by the opportunity.
“I stand before you today humbled by the deep honor and privilege to serve as your governor,” she said.
