Three gubernatorial candidates said in a recent public forum that they couldn’t support the Oklahoma Education Association’s attempt to dictate public education funding. Add the current governor to that list.
Gov. Brad Henry told The Oklahoman’s editorial board last week that he won’t support State Question 744, which would force the Legislature to increase school funding to the regional per-pupil spending level. Estimates put the cost of the change at about $850 million a year. Henry is calling foul on the union’s attempt to take important spending decisions away from policymakers.
That’s one reason for Oklahomans to vote no come November. But it’s hardly the only problem with the so-called HOPE initiative. Even in better funding times, paying for the change would be difficult. Other services would face cuts, taxes would increase or perhaps both...
