A history making highway project is underway in Tulsa.
Monday night, crews started shutting down portions of the Inner-Dispersal Loop around downtown.
Work is being done on the east and south sides of the IDL; crews will be making repairs to the surface to handle even heavier traffic.
Those stretches will be used as detour routes when work starts on the north and west sides.
The IDL project is the single largest ever in state history; it's costing $75-million.
That money is coming from the federal stimulus package.
Both, drivers and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation agree the work is long over due.
"It has been definitely a maintenance issue for us, the pavement itself is more than 40 years old," ODOT Spokesperson Kenna Mitchell said, "Add into that the heavy wear and tear, there's more than 60-thousand vehicles that drive out there."
During the construction ODOT will have 21 sensors set up in the area.
The devices detect the speed of traffic, sending messages to electronic billboards and telling drivers if there are delays.
Work is expected to be finished mid-July
