OKLAHOMA CITY — A design review of the state's truss bridges has so far led the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to temporarily close four bridges and place weight limits on more than two dozen others.
Two of the four bridges that ODOT temporarily closed were in Tulsa County.
The design review — requested by the federal government after a Minnesota truss bridge collapsed and killed 13 people in 2007 — will examine all 95 state-operated truss bridges.
Unlike ODOT's regular bridge inspections — which look at deterioration, cracks and rust, among other areas of concerns — the design reviews compare the bridge's original building plans to today's design standards.
"We're able to make a much more thorough evaluation of the design," said Gary Evans, ODOT's chief engineer.
