TAHLEQUAH — The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is asking the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality for a permit allowing for highway repairs along the Illinois River.
ODEQ issued a public notice this week seeking comments on the proposed project. ODOT wants to work along State Highway 10 at Hanging Rock, an area that was damaged during recent flooding. ODOT officials want to place 2,000 tons of 36-inch riprap stones at the “toe” and along the bank at the damaged locations.
The ODEQ officials said the stones are expected to be placed up to three-fourths of the fill height to minimize damage to existing trees and vegetation. Under the proposal, for the top fourth of the fill, above the riprap, ODOT will place filter blanket material and then top it off with material from the west ditch to encourage regrowth of vegetation along both highway shoulders.
In a draft certification by ODEQ Engineering Manager Mark Derichsweiler, the department tells ODOT all spills of fuel or other pollutants, in excess of five gallons, must be reported to ODEQ within 24 hours... FULL ARTICLE
