ODOT warns about short-term lane closures on Highway 69

All northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 69 in McAlester are open between Peaceable Road and Comanche Avenue, but some temporary lane closures are expected for several more weeks as the first phase of work to reconstruct the highway corridor nears completion.

That's according to a traffic advisory issued by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation regarding construction along the highway — also known as the George Nigh Expressway where it goes through McAlester.

"Short-term lane closures may be in place over the next few weeks as work completes, and drivers are asked to remain alert to crews and equipment in the corridor," the advisory states.

ODOT spokesperson Annahlyse Meyer said the first phase of the project is almost finished. The $13-million Phase 1 project included removal of traffic signals at Comanche Avenue and Peaceable Road and eliminating a highway crossing at Comanche, as well as reconstruction of a portion of the highway in all four north-south lanes.
