Officials urge driver care in work zones

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is observing National Work Zone Awareness week to call attention to the dangers of unsafe driving in construction areas.

The state Transportation Department is asking drivers to slow down and pay attention in construction areas as it observes National Work Zone Awareness Week.

About four out of five people who die in work zone wrecks are drivers and passengers in cars driving through them, a Transportation Department news release states. Eighteen people died in the first 11 months of 2010 in crashes in Oklahoma work zones. About 750 people were injured in more than 1,400 construction zone wrecks on state roads.

The Transportation Department, which is celebrating its centennial this year, has had 54 employees die while working, chief engineer Gary Evans told reporters at a news conference.

Officials cite fast driving, tailgating and technology-related distractions like cell phones as the causes for many of the wrecks, according to the news release... FULL ARTICLE
