Oklahoma candidates boost campaign war chests in congressional race

Mike Thompson, James Lankford lead Republicans in recent fundraising, while Billy Coyle tops Democrats

WASHINGTON — State Rep. Mike Thompson led the Republican money chase in the Oklahoma City area congressional race in the past three months, while Democrat Billy Coyle staged an aggressive fundraising drive to try to win his primary.

In the critical fundraising period between April 1 and July 7, in which candidates rushed to get enough money to pay for ads, Thompson raised $189,641. He was followed by political newcomer James Lankford, who collected $142,407, almost exclusively from individual donors. Attorney Kevin Calvey got $116,242, while state Rep. Shane Jett received $110,099.

Coyle, an attorney, raised $106,104 in the period, the first since candidates officially filed for office. Tom Guild, a college professor from Edmond, raised nearly $70,000.

The 5th Congressional District seat is open this year because Rep. Mary Fallin, the Oklahoma City Republican who has held the seat since 2007, is running for governor. The district includes most of Oklahoma County and Pottawatomie and Seminole Counties... FULL ARTICLE
