Oklahoma City mayor sees cost stalling transit changes (ARTICLE & VIDEO)

Mayor Mick Cornett said the city's transit system will improve, but don't expect major changes for some time.

The future of public transit in Oklahoma City could include everything from better bus service to light rail, but don't expect major changes anytime soon.

Mayor Mick Cornett said the city is trying to take first steps that will lead to a better transit system, but it will take greater demand and lots of money to come up with a system that will persuade most commuters to give up driving to work.

“Change is coming, but these changes are very slow,” Cornett said. “If you are trying to get people with choices to choose public transit, there is probably going to have to be some other factor involved here, whether that is higher gas prices or people living closer to the core of the city.”

A downtown streetcar was included as part of the MAPS 3 initiative passed by voters in December, 2009. Also included in MAPS 3 was a downtown transit hub that will allow the streetcar to connect to the city's bus system and future potential mass transit systems like light rail...
