The state Transportation Department is suing a bonding company for $170,000, alleging that a Houston-based painting contractor did substandard work on the Interstate 40 bridge over the North Canadian River in west Oklahoma City.
The lawsuit was filed against Colonial American Casualty and Surety Co., which provided the $378,000 performance bond on a project awarded to J&N International Coatings Inc. The lawsuit was filed after J&N officials said they lacked the financial means to perform corrective measures.
A bridge inspector and the company's president and secretary were indicted after an Environmental Protection Agency investigation. Company president Drossos Tiliakos was fined $10,000 and sentenced to 16 months in prison in 2005 for bribing an inspector to overlook contamination as old paint containing high levels of lead was dumped into an unsuitable landfill...
