Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry, state lawmakers reach deal on 2010 budget

A combination of targeted cuts and tapping the state's savings account along with federal stimulus funds will be used to balance this fiscal year's budget, the governor and legislative leaders announced today.

Under the proposal, the monthly allocation for state agencies will continue to be reduced by 10 percent through June, the end of the 2010 fiscal year. Originally, 5 percent budget cuts were planned for the rest of this fiscal year, but state revenues have continued to come in more than 20 percent below estimates.

Some agencies will be spared 10 percent cuts. A handful of agencies in education, health and public safety will subsequently receive additional appropriations to supplement their budgets this year and reduce their share of the overall reduction, according to the agreement.
