Oklahoma governor faces budget challenge

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, completing her first week on the job, said preparing her executive budget is not hampered by her not having already named a state finance director. She must present her budget proposal to legislators in three weeks.

Gov. Mary Fallin, completing her first week on the job, says she is working on an executive budget that she will present to lawmakers in three weeks.

State agency requests for funding in the next fiscal year have come in about 25 percent higher than the preliminary estimate legislators will have available to spend, records show.

The requests will compound the significant budget hole legislators will face for the 2012 fiscal year, which starts July 1.

Fallin said work on the budget is not hampered by her not having named a director for the state finance office. The Republican hopes to soon name a director, who more than likely will serve on her Cabinet as secretary of finance.
