MEASURES FACE TIGHT TIMELINE FOR GOVERNOR, SENATE APPROVAL TO AVERT AGENCY FURLOUGHS

The state House passed several appropriation bills Thursday designed to balance the current 2010 fiscal year budget.
The Senate is expected to consider the measures early next week. The bills then will be presented to the governor, who is expected to sign them, for he and legislative leaders brokered the agreement to provide emergency funding for several agencies and to wipe out the estimated $283 million deficit by June 30, the end of this fiscal year.
House Speaker Chris Benge said the governor’s signing the bills early next week should be enough time to avert trooper furloughs and some corrections furloughs scheduled to take effect in March.
