With legislators expecting a significant budget hole for the next fiscal year, a House budget subcommittee Tuesday asked agency heads how they would handle cuts that could reach 10 percent.
The responses were bleak: delaying road and bridge projects; a longer backlog of audits of counties and local governments; difficulty in holding the presidential primary election in early 2012; and more layoffs.
State Rep. Guy Liebmann, chairman of the House budget subcommittee on general government and transportation, said he expects a budget hole of about $500 million just to maintain present spending levels.
His committee, which will continue meeting today, kicked off about two weeks of House budget subcommittee meetings. Their findings will be submitted to the House Appropriations and Budget Committee, which will deal with measures to fund state agencies and operations... FULL ARTICLE
