Oklahoma legislators and residents honored legendary lawman Bass Reeves this week by renaming the Arkansas River Bridge on U.S. 62 at Muskogee the Bass Reeves Memorial Bridge.
On May 2, the Oklahoma House and Senate unanimously approved renaming the bridge for Reeves, and directed the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to create suitable permanent markers bearing his name for the bridge.
Following a dedication ceremony at Three Forks Harbor, those signs were unveiled, according to a report in the Muskogee Phoenix newspaper.
A bridge is an appropriate symbol for Reeves, U.S. Marshals Museum Executive Director Jim Dunn said Friday.
A $50 million national museum honoring the marshals is planned for the Fort Smith riverfront, overlooking the former Indian Territory across the border in Oklahoma... FULL ARTICLE
