Oklahoma's SQ 744 on education funding drawing a lot of debate

- The sides in the debate over State Question 744 continue to spar over how the proposal to raisee spending on common education would be funded.

Yes on 744 and the One Oklahoma Coalition each accuse the other of making misleading claims in their campaign advertisements.

SQ 744 would require per-pupil spending to rise to the regional average. It is among 11 proposals that state voters will consider on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

The One Oklahoma Coalition, which opposes the measure, says in its ads that SQ 744 would require tax increases or huge cuts to other state agencies.

The measure does not call for a tax increase and does not specify a funding source.

State Question 640, adopted by voters in 1992, requires that proposed tax increases receive three-fourths support in both the House and the Senate or go to a vote of the people.
