Oklahoma's treasurer says fiscal outlook is improving

Oklahoma Treasurer Scott Meacham said the 2010 budget year, which ended June 30, was toughest fiscal year on record. Collections for the year were $815.7 million, or 15.1 percent, below official estimates.

A boost in state revenue collections in the past two months has state officials hopeful that tax collections will improve and budget cuts to state agencies will be minimal in the next budget year.

State Treasurer Scott Meacham expects revenue growth to be "anemic" this fiscal year and said Tuesday that state agencies should expect budget cuts to be "more or less permanent."

The state just escaped what some call the worst budget year since the Great Depression, and cuts already made should make this fiscal year 2011 run a bit more smoothly.
