OKLAHOMA CITY — New Republican Gov. Mary Fallin has vetoed the first bill of her administration.
Fallin on Friday vetoed the measure that increases the limit on contracts that do not require competitive bidding from $50,000 to $100,000. The bill applies to contracts by the Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority for clearing rights-of-way along highways and interstates.
Fallin says the bill does not fulfill her goal of "brining more transparency and accountability to state government spending."
Rep. T.W. Shannon, who wrote the bill, says the measure was requested by ODOT to give the department more flexibility to respond to situations where rights-of-way need to be mowed to improve safety to motorists.
Shannon, R-Lawton, says he plans to work with the governor and introduce the bill again next year.
