OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The presidents of the state's two largest universities joined with Gov. Brad Henry to bemoan likely cuts to higher education they say would result from passage of a ballot measure.
University of Oklahoma President David Boren and Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis discussed on Friday devastating cuts that would result from approval of State Question 744.
The ballot measure would require Oklahoma within three years to match a regional average of per-pupil spending on common education for surrounding states.
Supporters of the initiative say Boren and Hargis are violating state ethics rules that prohibit individuals in publicly funded positions from campaigning.
Hargis and Boren say it is their obligation to discuss how the measure would effect higher education.
