TULSA - On Monday, President Obama announced he wants to spend $53 billion over the next six years to expand high speed rail service across the nation.
That announcement comes as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation works on it's first ever comprehensive plan for passenger and freight service.
In order to receive federal money, ODOT must have a plan for how it will spend it. Public input is part of that process. That is why ODOT is in the midst of holding public meetings across the state.
When it comes to securing federal money for rail service, the competition among states is tough.
Last year, Oklahoma was among 25 states that requested a share of $2.5 billion in federal rail funding. State transportation officials had hoped the money would help pay for high speed rail service between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. However, the Sooner state walked away empty handed.
