Playing tag: Renewal plan slowed by delays

A lobbyist for tag agents said last week that tag agencies are a "great example of privatization.” We’re not so sure about that.

At a time when most bills can be paid online, many Oklahomans still have to make a trip to a tag agency every year to renew their vehicle registrations. One lawmaker’s efforts to bring tag renewals into the digital age are being met with resistance from some tag agents worried about losing revenue.

At issue is a law that requires all state agencies to offer online services by July 1. An online renewal system was set to go live last week but was delayed. Rep. Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, who wrote the law, said he is frustrated by delays while agents complain about whether they will get a financial share of online renewals.

"We can never have privatization for the sake of privatization,” Murphey said. "It has to be either for convenience or to save money.”... FULL ARTICLE
