OKLAHOMA CITY – Though several groups – including the Oklahoma Farm Bureau and the Oklahoma Public Employees Association – have announced their opposition to State Question 744, a newly released poll shows the proposal has a 65-percent approval rating.

But that number could change before November, opponents say.

Designed to change the way Oklahoma funds its common education system, SQ 744 would tie per-pupil funding levels to a regional average. The measure was placed on the 2010 ballot after the Oklahoma Education Association collected more than 238,000 signatures in 2008.

Last week, the question’s supporters released a poll by SoonerPoll.com that showed SQ 744 with a 65-percent approval rating.

“When we began this effort, 61 percent of Oklahomans supported the question,” said Michael Kolenc, campaign manager for the group Yes on 744. “As we have spread our message, more and more Oklahomans agree that our kids and schools need to be a true priority. Our economy needs it and our kids deserve it.” FULL ARTICLE

1. Modify state law to allow schools to use ad valorem taxes for teachers salaries as well as some of the massive building projects they undertake. I am unsure as to whether or not maintenance costs for these facilities come from funds that also pay teachers salaries.
2. Obtain copy of Okla. Council of Public Affairs study showing that Okla. schools spend much more on administration than surrounding states. Admin. costs need lowered.
3.Eliminate the Federal Dept. of Education and thus unleash massive amounts of money that states could use for many things including teachers salaries.
4. Many past programs were put in place to eliminate the education funding problem(Lottery, other state questions), were has this money gone?
