President David Boren and OSU President Burns Hargis are speaking at the governor's office at 3:00 p.m. today about the negative and positive impacts of State Question 744.
They will not be speaking on behalf of their respective universities, said Chris Shilling, university spokesman.
"They want to inform voters," Shilling said. "President Boren will be there as David L. Boren, private citizen."
President Boren previously made his concerns about SQ 744 apparent when he released a joint statement with OSU President Hargis on Sept 22. In the statement, they asked for the removal of a SQ 744 commercial from the air because actors were wearing OU and OSU colors.
They weren't telling anyone how to vote, but they did not want people to think either school supported the proposal because "very large tuition increases will be necessary if the State Question passes," according to their statement.
SQ 744, along with 10 other State Questions, will be on the Nov. 2 midterm election ballot. If it is passed, Oklahoma will have to raise its expenditure per-pupil value to a regional average according to the six surrounding states of New Mexico, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Colorado. Oklahoma currently spends $8,006 per-pupil which is $1,627 lower than the regional average, according to a 2008-2009 report by the department of education.
