The campaign surrounding State Question 744 has revived a concerning issue that should make taxpayers uncomfortable: private groups that receive at least some public money engaging in electioneering.
It's no secret the largest donor to the pro-744 campaign has been the National Education Association, in which teachers voluntarily participate and must pay their own dues. But some of the smaller contributors include groups like the Oklahoma State School Boards Association, Organization of Rural Oklahoma Schools and the United Suburban Schools Associations. The groups charge for membership dues that are paid for with taxpayer money.
Campaign filings show the school boards association has donated $60,000 since 2008 to the pro-744 effort. The group offers legal and other services to its members and also lobbies lawmakers on policy matters... FULL ARTICLE
