State transportation officials will hold a public meeting Thursday to discuss replacing one of the worst-rated bridges in northeastern Oklahoma.

Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Catoosa Community Center, 105 E. Oak St., to review plans for replacing the westbound Oklahoma 66 bridge over Bird Creek - or the Verdigris River - in Rogers County.

During the meeting, ODOT officials will seek input from the public and review plans for the bridge's replacement.

The state expedited the highway's westbound bridge replacement project - originally scheduled to begin in 2012 - after recurring problems forced ODOT to close the bridge in December.

The closure came after years of maintenance work on the bridge.

Since 2008, ODOT has performed more than 40 emergency repairs on the bridge, said Randle White, ODOT's engineer for the Tulsa County area.

"I'm not talking about potholes in the bridge deck," White said. "I'm talking about holes all the way through." FULL ARTICLE
