Repairs to two bridges to close part of U.S. 64

Starting Monday, a 100-yard stretch of U.S. 64 between Vian and Gore will be closed for up to 120 days while the Oklahoma Department of Transportation rehabilitates two bridges.

Sequoyah County District 2 Commissioner Steve Carter said he made the announcement Monday to help ODOT, which wanted to close the road to speed up the work, and to ensure that area residents and emergency responders know they have to choose alternate routes.

According to an ODOT notice, the $2.49 million contract for the bridges over the Illinois River and nearby Deep Branch Creek was awarded to Wildcat Construction Co. and subsidiaries of Topeka, Kan., on Oct. 3. The bridges lie 1.9 miles and 2.2 miles east of the Muskogee County line, according to ODOT.

Although that area is not heavily populated, that road is heavily traveled, and the road closures will inconvenience many people. The location makes setting up a bypass road impossible, Carter said... FULL ARTICLE
