Road Science LLC is a new and old company at the same time.
The latest incarnation in asphalt formulas and road technologies keeps busy at its offices and laboratory at 6502 S. Yale Ave. The offices are the same as when SemGroup LP sold off its SemMaterials branded products unit to Rhone Midstream Holdings for nearly $7 million last year.
Some of the people are even the same. Road Science President Frank Panzer guided the SemMaterials division until July 2008 and then was hired back to run the leaner company, which focuses on engineering and contracts out the manufacturing side.
Craig McElwain, who is the Road Science director of business and commercial development, also is a SemMaterials veteran. He survived the changeover and believes he knows why Road Science was able to keep so many SemMaterials customers, such as city and county road projects.
