Roads remain logjammed; Travel highly discouraged

A day after an epic winter storm dumped as much as 21 inches of snow in Oklahoma, many major roadways remain closed to traffic and others are blocked from stalled vehicles.

"We are trying our best to keep these lanes open, get at least one passable lane through on the highways and interstates," says Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokesperson Kenna Mitchell. "Some challenges that we still have are some extremely tall snow drifts up to four feet that we're trying to clear. We've also got a large number of abandoned vehicles that are either on the road or near the roadway, so that's creating an additional hazard. Our focus today is really trying to get lanes open."

Mitchell says the lanes are cleared from the inside to the outside, so some exit ramps will be blocked by snow until clearance operations are complete. She urges drivers to stay off the roadways if at all possible... FULL ARTICLE
