Road crews began their work at 12:01 Monday morning on Highway 66 between Country Club Road and Will Rogers Boulevard in Claremore.
Only one lane is open in the northbound direction. Oklahoma Department of Transportation officials said only one lane in each direction will be closed at a time in an effort to keep traffic moving.
The rehab project includes repairs to faults in the road and new pavement.
Claremore city officials are asking motorists to be patient. The project should be completed in 180 days. Electronic message boards along Route 66 will update the status and warn drivers about lane closures ahead.
ODOT said the $4.3 million project is getting underway two years ahead of schedule.
