A malfunctioning traffic signal at the first of only two downtown Oklahoma City exits caused traffic jams and a bleak driving experience Friday for many motorists traveling for the first time on the new eastbound lanes of the Interstate 40 Crosstown.
Vehicles for a while were backed up for more than a mile from the Western Avenue exit during morning rush hour traffic. A traffic light at the end of the exit ramp at Western began flashing red instead of going through the green, yellow and red cycles, causing motorists to quickly back up, said Brenda Perry, a state Transportation Department spokeswoman.
“We're still a little baffled on how that happened,” she said. “Traffic was really queued up for quite a ways.”
