ScissorTales: ODOT right to take issue with road study (EDITORIAL)

A study giving Oklahoma poor marks for its roads is hardly a surprise. Our state has for years ranked poorly in most road and bridge surveys.

But the Oklahoma Department of Transportation has room to take issue with this latest study, by the Reason Foundation, because the organization used data from two years ago. Much has changed for the better since then.

The foundation's report placed Oklahoma 37th among the 50 states, which is down three spots from 2007. Our state did especially poorly in the categories of urban interstate condition (46th), rural interstate condition (40th), fatality rates (40th) and deficient or functionally obsolete bridges (38th).

However, legislation passed in recent years has pumped more money than ever to Oklahoma's transportation needs. ODOT has replaced or repaired 250 bridges since 2008, and since 2006 has replaced or upgraded more than 500 bridges. Nearly 150 transportation projects have been completed using federal stimulus money, with another 100 or so under way.... FULL ARTICLE
