Senate to start staff furloughs

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Senate will furlough its staff for two days each month beginning July 1 and will offer a voluntary buyout offer to each staff member in an effort to reduce its personnel costs, Senate administrators announced Wednesday.

Staff members were informed about action in a memo distributed Wednesday by Senate Pro Tempore Glenn Coffee.

“Even under the best-case scenario, the Senate will need to reduce its FY11 expenditures by more than $1 million and again reduce its FY12 expenditures by an equal amount, or more,” Coffee wrote. “Realistically, the only way we can achieve such sizable cuts is through reductions in personnel costs.”

Coffee, R-Tulsa, said the furloughs would apply to all Senate employees. Those employees, he said, would see a reduction of two days of pay (16 hours) in each paycheck, for a total of 12 furlough days... FULL ARTICLE
