RHETORIC is plentiful during any election season, and that has certainly been the case in advance of the Nov. 2 election regarding State Question 744. Here is The Oklahoman's attempt to sort fact from fiction
Myth: SQ 744 will take school spending decisions out of the hands of politicians.
Fact: The proposal bases per-pupil funding in K-12 on how much is spent in Colorado, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and Texas. That means elected officials in those states would dictate Oklahoma's spending level. Also, the measure doesn't give explicit control of any new money to local school boards.
Myth: Oklahoma can afford SQ 744.
Fact: Estimates of what SQ 744 would cost taxpayers range from $850 million to roughly double that. There's no revenue source outlined in the question. The cost is a moving target that would change annually, and Oklahoma would not be allowed to decrease education spending even if the average declines... FULL ARTICLE
