SALLISAW — Sequoyah County commissioners passed an emergency disaster proclamation Tuesday for the countywide flooding Sunday.
According to the proclamation, the flooding caused no fatalities and unknown injuries, but it caused considerable damage to public and private properties, threatening the safety and welfare of the county. The declaration makes the county eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance.
To a question from commissioners, Chris Keathley, Sequoyah County Department of Emergency Management director, said a hydroplaning fatality accident Sunday on Interstate 40 doesn't count toward the county disaster declaration as the criteria looks for such things as vehicles swept off by water.
Sheree J. Hohn, 30, of Fort Smith died around 10:45 a.m. Sunday after losing control of her vehicle in heavy rain. She was traveling west on I-40 in Sequoyah County when her vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol accident report.
Major storm damage includes water breaks in Sequoyah County Rural Water Association lines on the west end of the county, Keathley said. There are several breaks under bridges, and it is thought not all of them have been located yet, he said.
