Speaking out: Gov. Henry opposes SQ 744 (EDITORIAL)

In Oklahoma's contemporary history, public education has had two gigantic heroes in the governor's mansion: Henry Bellmon and Brad Henry.

No other chief executives in the state's history did as much as those two to further the cause of education reform and funding.

Therefore, anyone thinking about supporting State Question 744 under the notion that it would be good for schools should pause a moment and consider why Henry, the education governor of the 21st century, is leading the opposition to the proposal. Henry has accepted the honorary chairmanship of the One Oklahoma Coalition, a consortium of groups that oppose SQ 744.

The proposal would require the Legislature to raise per-pupil funding for public schools to the regional average within three years. Oklahoma is last among the seven states in the region. The measure includes no education reform and no new revenue to meet its funding mandate... FULL ARTICLE
