If state government came up with an extra dollar, we would want much of it spent on public schools.
Education should be a priority of state government. The success or failure of public schools determine our state's future success civically, intellectually and economically.
That said, State Question 744 — an initiative petition to constitutionally require the Legislature to spend at least as much per pupil on public schools as surrounding states spend — is a bad idea that should be killed by voters.
