JENKS -- A proposed amendment to the state Constitution is either a "monster that gobbles up money" or the only way Oklahoma will ever fund common education at a level comparable to surrounding states, protagonists in a debate on State Question 744 said Wednesday.
"It's a very simple proposition," said Joel Robinson of the Oklahoma Education Association, which supports the measure. "Should Oklahoma provide its kids the same investment in common education as surrounding states?"
Jeff Wilson of One Oklahoma, a coalition of opponents of SQ 744, said the proposed amendment would inevitably cause tax increases or massive cuts to other areas of state government.
