In "A way to move the state from the back of the line," Heather Sparks (Point of View, Sept. 15) said State Question 744 would give control back to the local communities. Nothing could be further from the truth. SQ 744 allows surrounding states to set teacher pay based on their per capita income, without regard for Oklahoma's lower cost of living and lower per capita income. Other states in our region have differing teacher salaries. If we raise, they raise — creating a kind of auction without end.
The Oklahoma politicians and bureaucrats who Sparks wants to cut out of the process are elected by the people, giving us a modicum of control. Give it up and you will see perpetual raises with no available funds to pay them. I can make a strong case for the fact that the more money we spend on education, the lower the quality education we get... FULL ARTICLE
