Beginning
Monday morning, two portions of Interstate 244 on the Inner Dispersal
Loop downtown will be closed as part of an 18-month, $75 million
repaving project.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation will close the southbound
lanes of the Inner Dispersal Loop's west leg and the westbound lanes of
its north leg as contractors begin a paving project that includes three
miles of highway and some 40 bridges.
The project stretches from I-244's bridge over U.S. 75 at the
northeast corner of downtown, west and south to the Arkansas River.
Traffic normally carried by those roads will be diverted to
the southbound lanes of the loop's east leg and the westbound lanes of
the loop's south leg. Crews recently patched potholes along those
stretches of highway, which will likely see increased traffic because
of the detour.
Currently, the IDL carries about 62,000 vehicles a day.
The lane closures will likely last for six to seven months, the
department said. Afterward, contractors will repave the northbound
lanes of the IDL's west leg and the eastbound lanes of its north leg.
