ENID — State Question 744 is a job killer, according to Fred Morgan, president and CEO of State Chamber of Oklahoma.
Morgan discussed SQ 744 and the other state questions to be on the Nov. 2 general election ballot at Thursday’s quarterly meeting of Enid Regional Development Alliance. He talked about the impact the state questions could have on the state.
Morgan said SQ 744 sets a minimum amount the Legislature must spend on K-12 schools. That amount would be the average spent by surrounding states, but the question specifies if those states cut education spending, Oklahoma’s appropriation must remain the same. The state chamber opposes the question.
“Where do we get the money?” Morgan asked.
Last year, lawmakers had to cut the state budget by about $1 billion, he said, and expect to have to cut another $500 million in the upcoming session. Morgan said the only way the money can be obtained to fund SQ 744 is through further cuts or an increase in revenue. It also could end economic development incentives, he said... FULL ARTICLE
