WASHINGTON - Oklahoma placed third in state rankings on both structurally deficient rural bridges in 2010 and on major rural roads in poor condition in 2008, according to a report released Thursday by a transportation research group.
Titled "Rural Connections: Challenges and Opportunities in America's Heartland," the report put the state in 15th place for the number of rural noninterstate traffic deaths in 2009.
The report considered a different category for each of the three years.
An official with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation pointed out that the statistics used on the bridge rankings are a few years old.
"Oklahoma began its process of reversing the trend of being No. 1 in the nation in bad bridges only about four or five years ago after decades of underfunding," said Terri Angier, ODOT's chief of media and public relations.
"We have already seen much improvements on the system but still have a long way to go." FULL ARTICLE
